Cypriot Ministry of Justice reports that police are investigating threats directed against the President, Head of the Central Bank and their families.
These messages were distributed by the so called "Deposits Salvation Group". This group threatens to kill the President and his family in case if the Cypriot government won't not stop write off of large deposits in Cyprus banks. We recall that under the terms of Cyprus obtaining financial assistance from the so-called "troika" (EU, ECB and IMF), depositors of the largest banks of the country (Cyprus Bank and Laiki), whose deposits amount to more than 100,000 euros, will lose 40 to 80% of their assets.
"This is a warning that we are not bluffing. We'll start with your grandchildren, then take care of your kids so that you feel the pain that we are feeling", - says the trespassers' message. Furthermore, in the leaflets it was stresses that the group also consists of "professionals whose services are paid well."
Threatening letters were sent by addressee to the police. No additional security measures will be taken for the president and others - said Minister of Justice Ionas Nicolaou, adding that any threats made against any citizen will also be considered on the general grounds. Meanwhile, the international news agency Reuters reported that the wife of Panicos Dimitriadis, Head of the Central Bank, along with her children left abroad, while Dimitriadis and the President of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis decided to increase their personal security after having received those letters.
